Capturing the Magic: How to Prepare for a Sunset Photoshoot
There’s a reason photographers love golden hour so much. That soft, glowy light, the calm at the end of the day, the way everything feels a little slower and more meaningful. A sunset photoshoot really does have its own kind of magic.
But if you’re a parent, the idea of heading out with your children close to bedtime can feel like a lot. So let me gently put your mind at ease. Staying out past bedtime, watching day turn to night. Sometimes it’s ok to disturb the routine to create something magical. One later night won’t undo everything, but the memories you make might stay with you forever.
Here are a few simple, low-pressure ways to help your sunset photoshoot feel relaxed, enjoyable, and very doable.
Take it easy during the day
For sunset photoshoots, I usually recommend starting around 90 minutes before sunset (or just before sunrise for early risers). On the day itself, less really is more. Keeping plans slow and low-key helps avoid over-tired little ones and gives everyone the best chance of arriving calm and settled. Save your energy for the evening, that’s when the magic happens.
Gently adjust nap times
If you can, adjusting nap times slightly can make a big difference. Even a short power nap can help your child feel more balanced heading into the evening. If you’re travelling to your session, leaving a little early often allows for a car nap, which can be a quiet lifesaver. A rested child is far more likely to feel curious and content than overwhelmed.
Eat before you arrive
A sunset photoshoot on an empty stomach is never a good idea for children or adults alike. Make sure everyone has eaten beforehand so hunger doesn’t distract you. You’re always welcome to bring snacks along too to help keep little energy levels steady.
Let go of expectations
This is a big one. Try to arrive with an open heart and no pressure on how things should look. Children will be children, some will run, some will cling, some will need a moment. That’s all part of the story. Trust that I’ll gently guide things and capture beautiful moments, whatever the mood. Often, the most meaningful images live in the in-between moments you never planned for.
Bring their pyjamas
A small tip that makes a big difference: bring pyjamas. Once we’re finished, you can pop your children straight into something cosy. When you get home, it’s straight into bed, and you can finally exhale, and maybe even pour yourselves a well-earned drink.
A final thought
Preparing for a sunset photoshoot doesn’t need to feel stressful. With a little planning and plenty of flexibility, it can actually feel like a pause, a moment to slow down together. One late night won’t disrupt your child’s routine in any lasting way. But the photographs you create? They’ll hold onto the feeling of that evening long after bedtime is forgotten.
Take a breath, lean into the light, and let the day softly turn into night.
I can’t wait to create magic memories with you.
