A September Evening on Dartmoor | Dreamy Wild Horses session

There’s something about September that I’ll always love.
The season is quietly shifting into autumn. The air feels a little cooler, the light softer, the evenings drawing in just enough to make space for cosy moments and early sunsets. It’s such a perfect time of year for a family photo session, especially when staying out a little later feels like an exciting adventure rather than a disruption.

This session with Blanche, Dean and Otto felt truly magical.

As a family photographer in Devon, this was one of those pinch-me moments. A golden sunset on Dartmoor. Wide open space. Wild ponies moving slowly across the moorland. And a beautiful family, fully present with one another. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Dartmoor has such a grounding energy. The land holds stories far older than us. The ponies have lived on Dartmoor since prehistoric times, which still amazes me. Even though they roam freely, they’re actually owned and rounded up annually. A little local detail for you.

As the sun dipped lower, the light wrapped around everything so softly. Otto wandered, explored, and laughed. Blanche and Dean followed his lead, letting the evening unfold rather than trying to control it. Those are always my favourite sessions, the ones where we allow space for things to just be.

Continuing Your Story


This wasn’t my first time photographing this family. I first captured Otto as a baby, during one of my very first sessions after moving back to Cornwall. Seeing him now, taller, full of fun and curiosity, gave me all the feelings. Time really does move so fast, and these photographs become such precious markers of that change.

That’s what keeps me coming back to family photography. Recording families laughing, loving, and simply being together in the moment. The candid interactions. The in-between glances. The stories that unfold when no one is asked to perform.
