Ask almost any photographer, and they’ll tell you their favourite time to shoot is sunset. There are countless reasons why this is the best time for family photos, but don’t just take my word for it. Why a Sunset Photoshoot is pure magic
As the sun sinks lower in the sky in the late afternoon or early evening, we enter a magical time known as “Golden Hour.” During this period, particles in the atmosphere diffuse the light, creating soft, flattering illumination and dramatic long shadows—perfect for portraits.
In addition to the beautiful light, a sunset session often culminates in stunning orange-red skies, providing a perfect backdrop for your photos.
We can shoot at any time of year, starting about 90 minutes before sunset to capture the best light. This could be as late as 8 PM in the summer months, giving us plenty of time to explore and not miss that dreamy light.
In spring and autumn, the sun sets earlier. Autumn, in particular, offers magical pink, red, and orange hues. If your children struggle to stay up late, an autumn session might be ideal—shoot first, then home for bed.
And finally, an evening on the beach is a truly magical experience; It’s quiet, peaceful, and more private. It’s my happy place, and I know it will quickly become yours too.
If you’re thinking, “But Mel, I want a summer shoot, and my children will be up past their bedtime!”—I hear you. As a mother, I understand the importance of routines. But trust me, one night off schedule won’t hurt. It will create a wonderful, lasting memory for you and your children. It’s so worth it.
You won’t regret it!
