When’s the Best Time to Book a Newborn Photo Session?
When Should You Book Your Newborn Photo Session? | A Gentle Guide
One of the most common questions I get asked is, “When should we book our newborn photography session? And honestly, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Because there’s no wrong time to document this season. Whether your baby is a few days old or a few months, each stage has its own kind of magic. What matters most is that you feel ready and that you’re choosing to be in the frame for this life-changing chapter.
My sessions aren’t about perfect posing or having it all together. They’re calm, slow, and shaped by whatever the day brings. We follow the light, your baby’s rhythm, and whatever moments naturally unfold.

Here’s a gentle guide to what different ages might look and feel like in a newborn session:
1–2 Weeks Old
That soft, sleepy, curled-up stage. Your baby’s still adjusting to life on the outside, tiny, squishy, and often dozing between feeds. These sessions tend to be slow and quiet, filled with stillness and sacred moments. There’s something incredibly moving about photographing a baby when the whole world still feels brand new.
2–4 Weeks Old
Your baby might be a little more alert now, stretching, looking around, perhaps not sleeping as much during the session (and that’s completely fine). We just follow their lead. It’s a lovely in-between stage: still very much newborn, but with those first signs of connection, eye contact, little sounds, tiny facial expressions.
1–2 Months Old
This is when babies begin to fill out a bit more: cheeks, rolls, and the beginnings of smiles. You might be feeling a touch more settled, finding a gentle rhythm in the day. Your baby is becoming more interactive, following your voice and responding to your presence. These sessions can include both cuddly naps and moments of wide-eyed wonder.
2–3 Months Old
We are now beginning to see more personality. Smiles, coos, the beginnings of play. Maybe even a bit of tummy time or little kicks. Your baby knows your face and your voice and is full of curiosity. These sessions are a blend of energy and tenderness, still rooted in those slow, cosy at-home days.
What My Newborn Sessions Feel Like
I don’t bring a studio setup or pose babies into baskets. My approach is gentle and documentary, focusing on connection, light, and real-life beauty. We might shoot in the quiet of your bedroom, the sunlit corner of your living room, or on your front steps with bare feet and a warm coffee. These sessions are about truth, not performance. About presence, not perfection.

So… When Should You Book?
The short answer?
Whenever you feel ready.
If you’re not sure what timing would be best for your family, I’m always happy to discuss it and help you decide.
I’d love to be part of your story.
