The story of you — Newborn Photography Guide
Cornwall Newborn Photographer
There’s so much anticipation when you’re expecting a new arrival. Baby showers, tiny clothes, endless lists, and all the planning that comes with preparing for a brand new life. Naturally, photography isn’t always at the top of that list. If you’re anything like me, you’re so focused on getting through pregnancy that you don’t think too much about the “after”.
Then baby arrives. Suddenly, you’re in that fleeting newborn bubble where everything feels completely different, yet strangely normal all at once. Thoughts about preparing for a baby are replaced with new ones: Are they feeding enough? When is the midwife coming? Am I doing this right? It’s no surprise that documenting this time with photography can quietly slip further down the list.
However, this season passes so quickly. And one day, you’ll wish you had a way to step back into it. If you’re pregnant and considering a newborn photography session, I’m encouraging you to gently move it to the top of your list.
Here are a few things to think about before booking your newborn photographer.

Choosing your newborn photographer
Finding the right photographer can take a little time, and that’s completely okay. A newborn session is deeply personal, so connection really matters. You should love their work, trust their approach, and feel comfortable inviting them into this tender chapter of your life.
In many ways, newborn photography is similar to wedding photography. Once this stage has passed, it can’t really be recreated. Choosing someone whose work resonates with you makes all the difference.

When to book your newborn Photography Session:
I always recommend booking while you’re still pregnant, ideally sometime after your 20-week scan. That way, it’s taken care of early, and you can relax knowing it’s one less thing to think about once baby arrives.
Most photographers, myself included, pencil in your due date first. Once your baby arrives, we will choose a session date that works best for you both.

In-home or studio newborn photography?
Both studio and in-home newborn sessions are lovely; they just offer different experiences.
Studio sessions often involve more gently posed images, usually focused on the baby, with some family photographs included. Meanwhile, in-home sessions have a lifestyle-led and documentary feel. They tell the story of your family as you are, in the space where these early memories are unfolding.
With in-home photography, I look for the softest light in your house and work around your natural rhythms. It’s relaxed, personal, and beautifully real.
If you choose a studio session, you may need to factor in travel time and packing everything you need. And if older siblings are coming along, bringing a few distractions can make things much smoother.

Worried your home isn’t “Pinterest ” enough?
Please don’t be.
Your home doesn’t need to look a certain way. The love you share matters far more than tidy surfaces. In fact, I love lived-in homes most, favourite toys, blankets, dummies, the little details that make up your everyday life. These things are part of this fleeting season.
Of course, if tidying helps you relax, that’s absolutely fine. But there’s no pressure for perfection. A messy bed with everyone cuddled in it, or a child’s room scattered with favourite toys, is wonderfully meaningful.
I specialise in honest, authentic photography, and your home should feel like you.

What age is best for newborn photography?
Different photographers have different preferences. Personally, I like to give families about a week to settle and recover before their session.
If you’re hoping for those sleepy, curled-up newborn images, the first 6–12 days often work well. However, if you prefer more interaction and alert expressions, any time up to around 12 weeks can still be perfect for you.
You also won’t know exactly how you’ll feel after birth. Booking in advance can help remove decision fatigue later. Otherwise, it’s easy to keep postponing until life feels calmer, and suddenly that tiny newborn stage has passed.

What if baby arrives early or late?
This happens more often than you’d think, so newborn photographers plan for it. I schedule sessions around your due date rather than a fixed day. Once baby arrives, you simply get in touch, and we confirm the actual session date.
Booking early also helps secure a photographer whose style you truly love, rather than finding they’re fully booked once baby is here.

Understanding the full cost
Transparency matters. Personally, I always like to know the full costs before making a decision, and most families feel the same.
Every photographer structures pricing differently, so it’s worth asking for a full pricing guide in advance. That way, there are no surprises, and you can choose what feels comfortable for your family.

More than just photographs
A newborn session isn’t just about “having photos”. It’s about preserving a chapter of your life that passes in a blur. The tiny fingers, the newness, the way your family reshapes itself almost overnight.
Choosing the right photographer means you’ll have images that don’t just show what life looked like, but help you feel it again, years down the line.
And one day, these photographs won’t just be for you. They’ll be part of your child’s story too.
