Photograph your older kids | Why it’s never too late to start
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said, “I can’t believe how much they’ve changed.” I say it all the time, and I hear it from other parents just as often. You scroll back a year on your camera roll, and suddenly your heart stops. Was that really just 12 months ago? Their face is a little rounder, their smile a little less grown-up, their hand still small in yours. How did so much change without us even noticing?
So, when is the right time to have professional family photos taken? Is it only when they’re babies and toddlers, with chubby cheeks and tiny toes?
Absolutely not.
The best time is now.
Our children never stop changing. Not when they start school, not when they hit double digits, and certainly not in their teenage years. Even if you feel like you’ve missed the “golden window,” you haven’t; every stage is golden in its own way.
As a mum to teenagers (and almost-teens), the cuddles become fewer, the conversations shorter, and their worlds start to expand beyond ours. They start becoming more independent, busier, and, let’s be honest, a little harder to pin down. The moments when you’re all together start to feel more precious. And that’s exactly why this time matters too.
You might not get the gummy grins anymore, but you’ll get something deeper—something real. Their growing confidence, their changing faces, and the little glimmers of the adult they’re becoming. You will never regret having photos of your older kids. I promise.
We put so much energy into capturing that first year—those early milestones, the squishy newborn days. But then life speeds up. School runs, work, activities, the emotional load… and sometimes, the camera gets put away. Until one day, you look at your teenager and think, “When did you get so tall?”
But here’s the beautiful thing: it’s never too late.
The best time is now.
I recently had the joy of photographing a lovely family in Woolacombe, Devon. Their kids were older, no babies in arms, but the session was filled with so much connection. Laughter, inside jokes, relaxed chats. It was unforced and joyful. They created new memories simply by showing up and spending intentional time together.
And that’s what this is really about.
It’s not about “perfect” photos.
It’s about real moments.
Moments you can look back on and feel.
There’s No Age Limit on Making Memories
Life keeps changing. I am not the same person I was a few years ago, and neither are our children. Every chapter deserves to be remembered, not just the beginning.
A family session doesn’t have to be a big deal. It just takes an hour or so, and we’ll keep it relaxed and fun. I’ll help guide you through it so it feels natural, never awkward. No cheesy poses or forced smiles, just honest moments between you and your family.
So here’s your gentle nudge, from one mum to another:
Photograph your older kids.
Not some day – now.
You’ll never regret it.
